Precut shims are metal spacers which are cut to a defined shape with a defined exact size before they leave the factory. As opposed to shim stock, which is delivered in rolls or full sheets, which need to be trimmed at the location, precut shims are delivered ready to use. Predominantly specified by maintenance engineers, plant engineers and MRO procurement teams, precut shims are chosen due to eliminating on-site cutting, shortening of installation time, avoiding rework due to inaccurate field cuts, and providing repeatable dimensional accuracy on all pieces in a batch.
Aashish Metal and Alloys produces precut shims in four common profiles: slotted and horseshoe shims, square and rectangular shims, round and circular shims, and completely custom profiles cut to customer specifications. All shims are manufactured by using in-house CNC laser cutting, stamping, waterjet or EDM water cut, and come in a wide variety of materials such as Stainless Steel 304, SS 316, Brass, Copper, Beryllium Copper (BeCu C17200), Inconel, Hastelloy, Duplex Stainless Steel and Carbon Steel.

Types of Precut Shims Available
Aashish Metals supplies the following precut shim profiles as standard, with custom profiles also available from DXF or PDF drawings.
Slotted and Horseshoe Precut Shims
The most frequently sold precut shim shape is the slotted precut shims, sometimes known as horseshoe shims, or U-cut shims. The open slot will enable the shim to be mounted sideways round a bolt or shaft without dismounting the fastener. This is a big time-saver when aligning the machine, especially with the pump and motor bases where re-shimming is required with the unit partially completed. Aashish Metals offers slotted precut shims in the standard slot widths of 1-1/4 inch to 7/8 inch in all available materials.
Square and Rectangular Precut Shims
The general format of the plate in structural levelling, machine bed support and general gap-filling applications, is square and rectangular precut shims, which are the standard flat plate format. They pile neatly and in an orderly manner. The entire perimeter bearing surface evenly spreads the load on the entire contact face minimizing fretting and deformation as opposed to narrow or irregular on-site cut pieces.
Round and Circular Precut Shims
Round precut shims, annular ring shims are applied at flange faces, pipe supports and circular machinery mounts. CNC laser cutting creates circular shims with close tolerances in diameter, so that surface contact is uniform and the location of the bolt holes are correct without manual marking and drilling.
Custom Precut Shims from Drawing
Non-standard hole patterns or complex outer profiles needed by OEM replacement or retrofit applications, stepped edges, or several slots are often specified by many engineers using non-standard profile shims. Aashish Metals will accept customer DXF, DWG or PDF drawings and cut-to-order precut shims in any material, any thickness and any quantity with CNC laser, waterjet or EDM. Custom precut shims do not require any fabrication on site whatsoever and are especially appreciated in situations where the shimming location is inaccessible using cutting tools.
Manufacturing Methods for Precut Shims
The choice of manufacturing method affects edge quality, dimensional tolerance and heat input into the material. Aashish Metals operates four cutting processes and selects the appropriate method based on material grade, thickness, required tolerance and batch size.

Precut Shim Packs and MRO Kits
MRO buyers and maintenance teams often need a variety of thicknesses to ensure accurate alignment during one installation. Aashish Metals provides precut shim packs and kits of pre-selected shim sets in a variety of thicknesses so that an engineer could construct up to the desired size of their gap without having to place an order and wait until the individual parts were received.
Normal shim packs come in stainless steel 304 and 316 slotted profiles. Shim kits can also be prepared to customer specifications, with the needed shapes, materials, range of available thickness and number per thickness specified on the order. Shim packs are most popular with process plants, maintenance contractors and shutdown crews where there are many machines being adjusted in one outage.

Frequently Asked Questions About Precut Shims
Shim stock is delivered in a roll form or full sheet and would have to be cut to shape at the construction site. Precut shims are factory-cut to shape and size, and are already ready to install. This does away with on-site measurement, marking and cutting, saves time in terms of installation and assures all pieces of the same dimensional quality.
Precut shims are used to fill gaps and fit components. Use them between surfaces to level or raise machinery. Slotted and horseshoe shims slide over a bolt but do not leave it. Square shims and round shims are installed at machine feet or faces of flanges. Lay down several thicknesses to get the superficial gap needed. Precut shims enhance fitting, minimize wear and vibration in equipment and installations.
