Beryllium Copper UNS C17200 Round Bar

Aashish Metals manufactures, supplies and exports Beryllium Copper C17200 Round Bars (UNS C17200 / CDA 172 / Alloy 25) to more than 50 countries in aerospace, oil and gas, defence and precision engineering. C17200, being the strongest copper alloy on record, attains tensile strength up to 1480 Mpa in the TH04 (age hardened) state due to a process of precipitation hardening which other standard copper alloys cannot match.

An age-hardenable alloy with a beryllium content of 1.8 to 2.0, this alloy provides a non-sparking, non-magnetic performance never seen before, and is the only approved option to use in explosive atmospheres as certified under ATEX/IECEx guidelines, or in MRI environments where ferromagnetic materials are not allowed. It also has electrical conductivity of 22% IACS (TF00 condition) which is not comparable to the high-strength steels which do not provide any electrical conductivity.

For buyers requiring greater machinability or higher conductivity with moderate strength, related grades Beryllium Copper C17300 and Beryllium Copper C17500 are also available. For a complete overview of all available BeCu products, please visit our View all Beryllium Copper Products page.

Temper Conditions for Beryllium Copper C17200 Round Bar

Buyers must specify the temper condition when ordering C17200 round bar. The four standard temper designations cover the full range from soft, formable annealed stock through to peak-strength precipitation hardened product. Selecting the correct temper is critical because mechanical properties vary significantly across conditions.
Temper Code Condition Tensile Strength (MPa) Yield Strength (MPa) Hardness (HRC) Elongation (%)
TB00 Solution Annealed 410 to 690 205 to 480 Rockwell B 65 to 85 35 to 60
TD04 Cold Drawn (1/4 Hard) 620 to 795 515 to 690 Rockwell B 90 to 100 10 to 25
TF00 Age Hardened from TB00 1105 to 1275 965 to 1140 36 to 42 3 to 10
TH04 Age Hardened from TD04 1280 to 1480 965 to 1205 38 to 43 15 to 30

AT Condition vs HT Condition: What Buyers Need to Know

AT Condition (Annealed / TB00): This is provided in the solution-annealed form. It is plush, very pliable and machineable. It is the desirable state in case the component is going to be cold worked, stamped, or formed prior to final heat treatment. Tensile strength under this condition is 410-690 Mpa.

HT Condition (Age Hardened / TF00 or TH04): The bar has been age hardened (precipitation hardened) post solution annealing and optional cold working. This is the state which provides the highest mechanical properties. HT condition components are fabricated to be used directly in stressful applications. Tensile strength is 12801480 Mpa TH04. Carbide tooling (grade C-2) or high speed steel (type M1, M2, T1, T2) should be used in case any additional machining is needed after hardening.

C17200 vs C17500 vs C17510: Comparison Table

The three principal beryllium copper grades serve different performance priorities. Use this table to select the correct alloy before raising an RFQ:

Typical ApplicationsNon-sparking tools, springs, aerospaceWelding electrodes, resistance weldingConnectors, lead frames, spot welding

In summary: specify C17200 when maximum strength and non-sparking properties are the priority. Specify C17500 or C17510 when electrical or thermal conductivity must be maximised and moderate strength is acceptable. Applications of Beryllium Copper C17200 Round Bar

C17200 round bars are specified when a combination of high fatigue strength, electrical conductivity above 20% IACS, and non-sparking behaviour is required simultaneously. No other standard copper alloy delivers this performance profile. For a deeper look at how BeCu is used across sectors, see Beryllium Copper Alloy Uses and Properties.

  • Aerospace and Defence: Spring contacts, waveguide components, actuators and structural fittings where fatigue resistance and non-magnetic certification are mandatory.
  • Oil and Gas: Drill collars, downhole instrumentation housings and non-sparking hand tools certified to ATEX/IECEx for use in explosive atmospheres.
  • Precision Measurement Instruments: Sensor housings and gauge components where dimensional stability under load and non-magnetic behaviour are required.
  • Spring Components and Electrical Contacts: Connectors, relay blades, switch contacts and precision springs requiring high fatigue life and 22% IACS conductivity.
  • Bushings and Bearings: High-load bearing surfaces in heavy machinery that demand wear resistance combined with adequate lubricity.
  • Non-Sparking Safety Tools: Hammers, wrenches and chisels certified for use in oil refineries, chemical plants and grain silos where spark ignition risk exists.
  • Welding Equipment and Electrodes: Resistance welding electrodes and electrode holders that benefit from BeCu’s high thermal conductivity and wear resistance.
  • MRI and Medical Equipment: Non-magnetic structural and fastening components used inside or adjacent to MRI scanners and other magnetically sensitive medical devices.
  • Automotive Suspension Systems: High-fatigue components in performance and motorsport applications where copper alloy spring properties are advantageous.
  • Marine Hardware and Fittings: Corrosion-resistant mechanical components for offshore and marine environments.

Frequently Asked Questions

UNS C17200 is also designated as CDA 172, Alloy 25, CuBe2 (DIN), CW101C (EN) and carries the material number 2.1247. Specifications governing are AMS 4533 and AMS 4534 (rod and bar), AMS 4651 (rod and bar, additional tempers), AMS 4725 (plate) and ASTM B196 (rod and bar). All forms are also in line with ASTM B441 (rod and bar) in dimensional tolerances.

C17200 has 1.8 to 2.0% beryllium and tensile strength reaching tensile strength of 1480 Mpa with IACS electrical conductivity of 22%. C17500 has 0.40 to 0.70% beryllium and has lower tensile strength (to around 790 MPa) but gives 45 to 60 percent IACS conductivity. Select C17200 with strength as priority, and C17500 with conductivity as priority.

Indicate TB00 (annealed) in case the bar shall also be further shaped, machined, and cold worked prior to heat treatment. TH04: Select this option when you require the bar to be as hard and strong as possible and can be used immediately. TF00 is age-hardened TB00 and can be used in applications that demand a combination of formability and strength. TD04 is cold drawn and would be used when a certain amount of work hardening can be tolerated before machining.

Yes. The inherently non-sparking nature of C17200 is due to its lack of sparks through impact or friction with other metals. It is also non-magnetic, which means that it is not affected by and does not disrupt magnetic fields. The two properties allow it to be used as the material of choice in ATEX/IECEx certified safety tools and as an element in or around MRI scanners.

When C17200 is in the TF00 or TH04 (age hardened) condition, the electrical conductivity is about 22% IACS. Under the annealed TB00 state, the conductivity is a bit higher at around 25 to 28% IACS.

Yes. Each Beryllium Copper C17200 round bar will be shipped with full material test certificates (MTC) such as chemical composition, mechanical properties and heat number traceability. Aashish Metals has ISO 9001: 2015 certification. Third-party checking, NACE certification report, and other test reports may be ordered upon request.

Standard stock has 16 mm-50 mm round bar. Diameters of 3 mm, up to 250 mm are custom-made. Normal lengths that are offered include cut-to-length of 500 mm to 6000 mm. Contact us to find out about the oversized and non-standard lengths.
