Temper Conditions and Spring Properties
The temper condition of C17200 BeCu strip determines the balance between formability and final mechanical performance. Engineers specify temper based on the forming operations required before age hardening and the spring load and fatigue life requirements in service. The following table summarises the key temper conditions available from Aashish Metal and Alloys:
| Temper | Condition | Tensile (MPa) | Yield (MPa) | Conductivity | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AT (TB00) | Annealed / Soft | 550 to 770 | 170 to 380 | 22 IACS min | Best formability |
| TD01 (1/4 H) | Quarter Hard | 620 to 830 | 380 to 590 | 22 IACS min | Good bend radius |
| TD02 (1/2 H) | Half Hard | 690 to 900 | 515 to 760 | 22 IACS min | Balance of form and strength |
| TD04 (H) | Hard | 825 to 965 | 690 to 895 | 22 IACS min | High strength strip |
| TH02 | Hardened | 1105 to 1310 | 930 to 1170 | 22 IACS min | Spring contacts, bellows |
| TH04 | Spring Hard (Peak) | 1280 to 1480 | 965 to 1205 | 22 IACS min | Relay blades, precision springs |
For spring contacts and relay blades where maximum hardness and fatigue resistance are required, the TH04 temper delivers the highest tensile and yield strength after age hardening at approximately 315 deg C. For components that require complex forming before hardening, AT (annealed) temper strip is the correct starting point.
Chemical Composition of Beryllium Copper C17200
| Grade | Cu (%) | Be (%) | Co (%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beryllium Copper C17200 | Remainder (min 97.9) | 1.80 to 2.00 | 0.20 max |
The beryllium content is tightly controlled within the 1.80 to 2.00% range. This precise concentration enables the age hardening response that gives C17200 its spring strength. Carbon content control is also critical when service temperatures approach 600 deg C, as graphitisation at elevated temperatures can compromise mechanical properties. C17200 is generally rated for service up to 600 deg F (315 deg C) in continuous operation.

Safety Note: Beryllium Dust Inhalation Hazard
Beryllium copper is not hazardous when used in solid form as a strip, coil or plate. Nevertheless, beryllium copper machining, grinding, cutting, or polishing produces small amounts of beryllium dust and particles that are considered to be a respiratory hazard. Breathing of beryllium dust may lead to Chronic Beryllium Disease (CBD), a permanent lung disease. These precautions should be followed in any machining operation:
- High speed steel or carbide tooling (M1, M2, T1, or T2 grades suggested) with sufficient cutting fluid should be used to reduce the amount of dust produced.
- The machining of BeCu should be performed either with local exhaust ventilation (LEV) or covered wet grinding systems.
- NIOSH approved respirators with a fine particulates rating (minimum P100) are required of the operators.
- Work clothes and protective gloves need to be used. During the machining, dirty clothing should not be put on.
- Air monitoring of the workplace must be carried out to maintain the level of beryllium at a level of 0.1 microgrammes per cubic metre which is the OSHA Action Level.
Beryllium copper in machined or finished form of a spring, a contact or connector is not harmful to the end users. The risk is particular to the machining and finishing.
