Beryllium Copper UNS C17200 Strips / Coils

Beryllium Copper C17200 Strips and Coils Supplier | UNS C17200 Alloy 25

Beryllium Copper UNS C17200 Strips and Coils (also called Alloy 25 or CDA 172) is the gold standard of high performance copper alloys. The key value proposition of C17200 strip is that it presents a balance of spring strength and electrical conductivity that cannot be achieved by any single standard copper alloy and steel. BeCu C17200 strip features tensile strength of up to 1480 MPa and electrical conductivity of about 22% IACS in the completely hardened TH04 temper, enabling engineers to not compromise one axis of performance at the expense of the other.

These materials are used in the electronics, automotive, telecommunications and aerospace industries as the first choice of spring contacts, relay blades, switch contacts, connector shells, bellows, and diaphragms with thicknesses between 0.05 mm and 6.35 mm and widths up to 600 mm. Aashish Metal and Alloys is a PED approved production company, stockist and exporter of Beryllium Copper C17200 Strips and Coils, which serves more than 52 nations across the globe with full material traceability and third party certification.

Temper Conditions and Spring Properties

The temper condition of C17200 BeCu strip determines the balance between formability and final mechanical performance. Engineers specify temper based on the forming operations required before age hardening and the spring load and fatigue life requirements in service. The following table summarises the key temper conditions available from Aashish Metal and Alloys:

TemperConditionTensile (MPa)Yield (MPa)ConductivityTypical Use
AT (TB00)Annealed / Soft550 to 770170 to 38022 IACS minBest formability
TD01 (1/4 H)Quarter Hard620 to 830380 to 59022 IACS minGood bend radius
TD02 (1/2 H)Half Hard690 to 900515 to 76022 IACS minBalance of form and strength
TD04 (H)Hard825 to 965690 to 89522 IACS minHigh strength strip
TH02Hardened1105 to 1310930 to 117022 IACS minSpring contacts, bellows
TH04Spring Hard (Peak)1280 to 1480965 to 120522 IACS minRelay blades, precision springs

For spring contacts and relay blades where maximum hardness and fatigue resistance are required, the TH04 temper delivers the highest tensile and yield strength after age hardening at approximately 315 deg C. For components that require complex forming before hardening, AT (annealed) temper strip is the correct starting point.

Chemical Composition of Beryllium Copper C17200

GradeCu (%)Be (%)Co (%)
Beryllium Copper C17200Remainder (min 97.9)1.80 to 2.000.20 max

The beryllium content is tightly controlled within the 1.80 to 2.00% range. This precise concentration enables the age hardening response that gives C17200 its spring strength. Carbon content control is also critical when service temperatures approach 600 deg C, as graphitisation at elevated temperatures can compromise mechanical properties. C17200 is generally rated for service up to 600 deg F (315 deg C) in continuous operation.

Electrical and Thermal Properties

The electrical and thermal performance of C17200 BeCu strip makes it indispensable in connector and relay applications where both current carrying capacity and mechanical spring function are required from a single component:

  • Electrical Conductivity: Approximately 22% IACS in the TH04 (fully hardened) temper condition.
  • Thermal Conductivity: Approximately 105 W/m K, significantly higher than most engineering alloys used for springs.
  • Magnetostrictive Properties: Non magnetic, making C17200 strip safe for use in MRI environments, precision instruments, and magnetic sensor housings.
  • Non Sparking: Safe for explosive and hazardous environments including oil refineries, chemical plants, and mining operations.
  • Melting Range: Approximately 866 deg C to 982 deg C (1590 deg F to 1800 deg F).
  • Service Temperature: Rated up to 600 deg F (315 deg C) for continuous operation.
  • Corrosion Resistance: Good resistance to natural and distilled water, caustic soda, alkaline and neutral salt solutions, and dry fluorine. Moderate resistance to sulfuric and hydrochloric acids at low concentrations.

C17200 vs C17300 vs C17500 Beryllium Copper Strips Comparison

Specifying the correct beryllium copper strip grade requires matching the conductivity and strength requirements of the application. C17200 is the premium high strength grade, while C17300 and C17500 offer higher conductivity at lower strength levels. The table below assists in grade selection:

Key AdvantageHighest strength, best spring fatigue lifeHigher conductivity, lower strengthBest conductivity, lowest strength in BeCu family
Typical UseSpring contacts, relay blades, precision springsSpot welding electrodes, bushingsHigh conductivity electrical contacts

For applications where spring fatigue life and maximum strength are the primary requirements, such as relay blades, switch contacts, and precision springs, C17200 is the correct choice. For applications prioritising electrical conductivity over spring strength, C17500 may be considered. Consult our team for grade selection support.

Safety Note: Beryllium Dust Inhalation Hazard

Beryllium copper is not hazardous when used in solid form as a strip, coil or plate. Nevertheless, beryllium copper machining, grinding, cutting, or polishing produces small amounts of beryllium dust and particles that are considered to be a respiratory hazard. Breathing of beryllium dust may lead to Chronic Beryllium Disease (CBD), a permanent lung disease. These precautions should be followed in any machining operation:

  • High speed steel or carbide tooling (M1, M2, T1, or T2 grades suggested) with sufficient cutting fluid should be used to reduce the amount of dust produced.
  • The machining of BeCu should be performed either with local exhaust ventilation (LEV) or covered wet grinding systems.
  • NIOSH approved respirators with a fine particulates rating (minimum P100) are required of the operators.
  • Work clothes and protective gloves need to be used. During the machining, dirty clothing should not be put on.
  • Air monitoring of the workplace must be carried out to maintain the level of beryllium at a level of 0.1 microgrammes per cubic metre which is the OSHA Action Level.

Beryllium copper in machined or finished form of a spring, a contact or connector is not harmful to the end users. The risk is particular to the machining and finishing.

Frequently Asked Questions About Beryllium Copper C17200 Strips and Coils

Strips are a straight cut, flat piece of BeCu that is available in cut lengths, whereas coils are strips that are rolled up to create rolling material that is easily transported and continuous feed in progressive die stamping and forming processes. They are both offered with the same grades, thickness and temper conditions.

ASTM B197 and AMS 4532 are the major standards of BeCu C17200 strip and coil. Other relevant standards are ASME SB194, SAE J463 and SAE J461. All the materials provided by Aashish Metal and Alloys are certified to these standards with complete mill test certificates.

TH04 temper (also known as Spring Hard or Extra Hard) is the appropriate specification of spring contacts, relay blades and switch contacts where maximum fatigue life and spring force are needed. When the component needs to undergo a complex forming then AT (annealed) temper strip is ordered and age hardened after forming.

Normal foil thickness begins at 0.05 mm. Thinner foil, 0.01 mm, can be ordered on request as shim stock of BeCu and in high-end EMI shielding applications. Call our sales department to check on the availability of the thickness and width that you need.

A competent supplier of BeCu strips must provide complete material traceability, EN 10204 3.1B mill test certificates, meet ASTM B197 or AMS 4532 requirements, offer tempering parameters and be able to provide individual slit widths and thicknesses. Aashish Metal and Alloys offers all these, supported by a 20 years experience and a network of exports into 52 countries worldwide.

The most common applications are spring contacts, relay blades, switch contacts, electrical connector shells, bellows, diaphragms, precision springs, BeCu shim stock, EDM electrodes, and telecommunications equipment springs. C17200 BeCu strip is also non magnetic and non sparking, making it a good product to use in hazardous and magnetically sensitive areas.
