Stainless Steel Grades Available for Pipes and Tubes
The difference is mainly in how the product is ordered. Pipe is specified by Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) and schedule—for example, 2 in NPS Schedule 40S—and its actual outside diameter is set by the pipe dimensional standard. Tube is specified by exact outside diameter × wall thickness—for example, 12.7 mm OD × 1.24 mm wall—because tube fittings, tube sheets and instrumentation systems depend on a precise OD. Both pipe and tube can be seamless or welded when the applicable material standard permits it. Selection should follow the product standard, design code, pressure/temperature duty and dimensional tolerance required by the application.

Seamless vs. Welded Stainless Steel Pipe: How to Choose
| Parameter | Seamless SS pipe | Welded SS pipe (ERW/EFW) |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturing | Hot-rolled or cold-drawn billet, no weld seam | Strip/plate formed and longitudinally welded |
| Pressure rating | No longitudinal weld seam; often selected where seamless construction is specified for critical service. Design pressure still depends on grade, wall, temperature and design code. | Suitable for pressure service when produced and inspected to the applicable material standard/design code. Capacity depends on grade, wall, temperature, weld category and examination. |
| Size range | Available range depends on grade and mill route; generally a smaller maximum OD than large-bore welded/EFW product. | Aashish supply range to 30" NB; larger EFW/LSAW sizes only on confirmed enquiry. |
| Cost | Typically higher because of the seamless manufacturing route and size/grade availability | Often more economical at larger diameters, subject to grade, wall and examination requirements |
| Best suited for | Process and critical services where seamless construction is specified | Process, sanitary, structural and large-bore service where welded construction is permitted |

Stainless Steel Pipe Sizes, Schedules & Weight Reference
Pipe dimensions should be read against ASME B36.19M for wrought stainless steel pipe. NPS is nominal; the outside diameter is fixed for each NPS while wall thickness changes with schedule. Sample 40S/80S values are below; confirm the full size/schedule range against the applicable dimensional standard and the order specification.
| NPS | OD (mm) | 40S WT (mm) | 80S WT (mm) | 40S kg/m | 80S kg/m |

Approx. mass (kg/m) = (OD − WT) × WT × 0.02491 for austenitic stainless steel at ~7.93 g/cm³. Use mill/theoretical data for final commercial weight.
Stainless Steel Pipes Price per Kg
Stainless steel pipe pricing is quoted per kilogram and moves with several variables rather than a flat rate card:
- Grade and nickel/molybdenum content — 316/316L runs above 304/304L; duplex and 904L sit higher still
- Manufacturing type — seamless pipe carries more processing cost than ERW or EFW welded pipe at the same size
- Surface finish — mirror-polished and electropolished finishes cost more than mill (2B) finish
- Wall thickness and schedule — heavier-wall XXS product uses more material per metre than thin-wall 5S
- Order quantity — volume orders typically qualify for tiered discounts over small cut-length orders
- Nickel/molybdenum alloy surcharge and market price — major cost inputs for austenitic and high-alloy grades; quotations are typically time-limited
How Stainless Steel Pipes & Tubes Are Manufactured
- Seamless hot-finished pipe
The products Aashish Metal & Alloys supplies are produced at approved mills using the process specified for the order. For seamless hot-finished pipe, a solid billet is heated and pierced into a hollow shell, then hot-finished to the required dimensions. After heat treatment, the product is straightened, descaled or pickled as applicable, inspected and tested to the governing material standard. - Seamless cold-finished pipe and tube
A hot-finished hollow is cold-drawn or pilgered over a mandrel to achieve tighter OD/wall tolerances and a smoother surface. Intermediate and final heat treatment and pickling are applied as required by the product standard. - Welded pipe and tube
Stainless strip or plate is formed and longitudinally welded, then heat-treated, finished and examined to the applicable pipe or tube standard. ASTM A790 welded duplex pipe is made by an automatic welding process without filler metal; other welded product standards have their own manufacturing and examination requirements.
