What is Inconel 600 Round Bar?

A round bar of Inconel 600 is a solid cylindrical bar made out of a nickel-chromium-iron superalloy, named UNS N06600 and DIN WNR 2.4816. It is made to ASTM B166 and ASME SB166 specifications and is aerospace qualified as AMS 5665. It is made of at least 72% nickel with 14 to 17% chromium and 6 to 10% iron, which provides the alloy with a rare combination of properties unavailable to any austenitic stainless steel.

A major distinction between inconel 600 bar and the normal austenitic stainless steels is that, it is virtually resistant to chloride ion stress corrosion cracking. It provides exceptional carburization strength at high temperatures, and is choice of material in furnace baskets, heat treatment racks and retorts. It is also an alloy that is quite resistant to oxidation at high temperatures and exhibits dependable service between cryogenic temperatures and 1093 deg C (2000 deg F). It should not be used at red heat in atmospheres that are elemental sulfur content.

The high nickel content of 72% minimum provides excellent resistance to organic and inorganic compounds and makes Inconel 600 virtually immune to chloride ion stress corrosion cracking. The chromium addition of 14 to 17% imparts resistance to sulfur compounds and oxidizing conditions at high temperatures.

These mechanical values are per ASTM B166 for annealed bar. Tensile strength of 550 MPa minimum and yield of 240 MPa minimum make Inconel 600 bar suitable for structural and pressure-containing applications at both ambient and elevated temperatures.
