Beryllium Copper C17200 Plate

Beryllium Copper C17200 Plate Supplier — UNS C17200 / Alloy 25 Sheets

Aashish Metals is a reliable producer, distributor and exporter of Beryllium Copper C17200 Plate in India. Commercially referred to as Alloy 25 and denoted as UNS C17200 or CDA 172, the plate is the strongest plate of copper alloy and it is superior to practically every other commercial copper-based plate in tensile and yield properties.

C17200 plate is age hardenable, i.e. it is furnished in a soft, readily machinable form (TB00), and precipitation hardened to obtain maximum strength (TF00). In the fully age-hardened TF00 state the alloy provides tensile strength of 165 ksi (1138 MPa) and a thermal conductivity of 105 W/m.K, which makes it the alloy of first choice in plastic injection moulding tooling, structural components that do not spark in hazardous environments and structural components in aerospace.

Our UNS C17200 plates are produced to ASTM B194 which is the main plate standard and plate thickness is produced between 6.35 mm and 76.2 mm and sheet thickness is produced between 0.5 mm and 6.35 mm with a maximum width of 1220 mm.

C17200 Beryllium Copper Plate Specification — ASTM B194

The primary standard governing beryllium copper plate is ASTM B194. This specification covers the chemical composition, mechanical properties and dimensional tolerances for wrought copper-beryllium alloy plate and sheet. Additional standards ASTM B534 and B768 apply to specific forms and heat-treated conditions. For drilling and oilfield structural applications, C17200 plate also conforms to API Spec 7.

Temper Conditions — TB00 (AT) vs TF00 (HT)

One of the most important selection factors for Beryllium Copper C17200 Plate is the temper condition in which the material is supplied. Understanding the two primary tempers allows engineers to choose the right condition for machining, tooling design and final application requirements.

Temper Code Condition Best Used For
TB00 (AT) Annealed (solution heat treated) Soft and machinable; ideal for complex machining before final hardening
TF00 (HT) Age Hardened (precipitation hardened) Maximum strength and hardness; used for finished tooling and structural components
Recommended practice: Order plates in the TB00 (annealed) condition for all machining operations. After machining is complete, age harden at approximately 315 deg C (600 deg F) for two to three hours to achieve TF00 properties. This two-stage process eliminates dimensional distortion caused by hardening complex geometries after final machining.

Beryllium Copper C17200 Plate — Physical, Mechanical and Thermal Properties

These properties highlight why UNS C17200 is the preferred copper plate for high-stress and high-conductivity applications. Values shown reflect the TF00 (fully age-hardened) condition unless otherwise noted.
Property Value Property Value
Density 8.25 g/cm3 Tensile Strength 165 ksi / 1138 MPa
Melting Point 982 deg C (1800 deg F) Yield Strength (0.2%) 140 ksi / 965 MPa
Elongation 3% Elastic Modulus 131 GPa
Thermal Conductivity (TF00) 105 W/m.K Electrical Conductivity 22% IACS (TF00)
Hardness (TF00) 36 to 42 HRC Fatigue Strength Excellent; superior to most copper alloys
Why Thermal Conductivity Matters in Mould Tooling
The thermal conductivity of C17200 plate in the TF00 condition is 105 W/m.K. This is about three or four times greater than that of P20 mould steel ( approx. 29 W/m).K). When injecting mould inserts with BeCu, plates and core sections are used, the heat is removed out of the mould cavity much more quickly, significantly shortening the length of the cycle, enhancing surface finish on moulded components and increasing the life of the moulds by reducing thermal fatigue. This renders Beryllium Copper C17200 Plate as the most valuable tooling material in arduous moulding processes.

Industrial Applications of Beryllium Copper C17200 Plate

Beryllium copper plates from Aashish Metals are trusted by industries worldwide for exceptional performance and reliability. The table below outlines the primary industries and the specific role C17200 plate plays in each.

Tooling and Mould Making

BeCu C17200 plates are easily machined under the TB00 condition and age hardened to provide hardness ranging between 36 and 42 HRC thus the best choice of injection mould inserts, cavity plating and core plating. They have a thermal conductivity of 105 W/m.K will remove heat four times quicker than P20 steel in the mould cavity, reducing the cutting cycle times, and enhancing the quality of the parts.

Oil and Gas / Hazardous Environments

C17200 plates which are non-sparking and non-magnetic are employed in structural components, clamps, bushings and wear pads in refineries, offshore platforms and explosive-classified areas where steel tools are likely to ignite flammable atmospheres.

Aerospace and Defence

C17200 plate is the material of choice in airframe components, landing gear bushings and high-precision structural components due to high strength-to-weight ratio and high fatigue resistance.

Electrical and Electronics

C17200 plate is used as a bus bar section, switch gear products, heat sinks and electrical contacts that have to conduct current under mechanical load. Good electrical conductivity and high strength are desired.

Automotive

Applied to high-performance bushings, bearing plates and suspension parts that cannot be supported by standard copper alloys due to its inability to resist repeated loading.

Marine

BeCu plate has an excellent corrosion resistance in seawater, and is a long-life solution in propeller shaft bushings, seacock bodies and non-sparking deck hardware.

Telecommunications

C17200 plates are machined to precision parts in the waveguide assemblies and connector devices where the dimensional stability and conductivity is required to be held together.

Non-Sparking and Non-Magnetic Properties

C17200 plate is both non-sparking and non-magnetic. In oil refineries, gas processing plants and classified explosive atmospheres, tools and structural components made from steel risk igniting flammable vapours upon impact. C17200 structural plates, clamps and wear components eliminate this risk entirely. In addition, the completely non-magnetic character of BeCu plate makes it indispensable in MRI facilities, defence electronics and sensitive test environments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Beryllium copper plate is a mixture of the power of steel and conductivity of a copper alloy. It is frequently used in injection mould inserts, bushing plates, non-sparking structural parts, aerospace structural parts and in precision tooling due to its high resistance to fatigue. It is especially appreciated in those areas in which cyclic loading, thermal control and spark-free operation are necessary at the same time.

With the fully age-hardened TF00 condition, C17200 has a yield strength of 140 ksi (965 MPa) and tensile strength of 165 ksi (1138 MPa). This is similar to or even better than most carbon and alloy steels. As compared to steel, BeCu also maintains good electric and thermal conductivity which is why it is the best option wherever strength and conductivity is needed.

C17200 plate is annealed in solution (TB00 condition) at about 800 deg C leaving the alloy in a soft, machinable condition. Precipitation hardening (age hardening) is then performed at 315 deg C two to three hours after machining turning the material to the TF00 state, the highest strength and hardness. This is the two step procedure that is applied in tooling and manufacture of aerospace components.

The prices of beryllium copper C17200 plates are based on the thickness, width, quantity, temper condition and the prices of raw materials at the time. Beryllium is a specialty metal and the cost is due to its rarity and complexity of processing.
