Aashish Metals_Blog Banner_25 Sept_002

The exact linear mass of piping is a fundamental requirement when designing piping, structural framing, logistics planning and estimating materials costs. A clear, easy to read stainless steel pipe weight chart enables piping engineers, procurement staff, project estimators and fabricators to quickly verify dead load calculations, calculate freight shipping capacity and specify a structural support without risk of manual calculation errors.

Standard dimensions and weight information in kilograms per meter (kg/m) for piping in Schedule 5S, 10S, 40S, 80S, 160S and XXS according to ASME/ANSI B36.19M is included in this comprehensive reference manual. This guide includes standard metric data tables as well as mathematical calculation formulas, imperial conversion metrics, density factors for corrosion-resistant alloys, and the effect of flange bolting hardware and tube-end sealing due to pipe wall thickness.

What Is a Stainless Steel Pipe Weight Chart?

Stainless Steel Pipe Weight Chart is a chart which indicates the weight of different sizes of pipes, outside diameter and wall thickness. Useful for engineers, procurement department and fabricators in order to determine material weight, transportation requirements and cost estimation. While referring to the chart, it should be known what each term means. They are: Nominal Bore (NB), Nominal Pipe Size (NPS), Outside Diameter (OD), Pipe Schedule (Sch) and Wall Thickness (WT). OD remains the same for a particular Nominal Pipe Size while wall thickness varies according to schedule. Selection of stainless steel schedule such as Sch 40S is very important for industrial purposes and is standardised by ASME B36.19M.

How to Calculate Stainless Steel Pipe Weight (Formula)

While reference charts cover standardized dimensions, custom fabrication or field checks frequently require mathematical calculations. The theoretical linear weight of a round stainless steel pipe depends on its outside diameter, wall thickness, and material density.

Mathematical Formulas

Metric System (kg/m)

Weight (kg/m) = (OD − WT) × WT × 0.02466

  • OD = Outside Diameter in millimeters (mm)
  • WT = Wall Thickness in millimeters (mm)
  • 0.02466 = Empirical factor derived from density (7.93 g/cm³ × π /1000)

Imperial System (lb/ft)

Weight (lb/ft) = (OD − WT) × WT × 10.69

  • OD = Outside Diameter in inches (in)
  • WT = Wall Thickness in inches (in)

For standard manufacturing tolerances, refer to ASME B36.19M, the governing dimensional standard for stainless steel pipe.

Worked Example: 2″ NB Schedule 40S Pipe

To determine the linear mass of a 2″ Nominal Bore (50 mm NB) Schedule 40S stainless steel pipe:

  1. Identify Dimensions:
  • Outside Diameter (OD) = 60.3 mm
  • Wall Thickness (WT) = 3.91 mm
  1. Apply the Metric Formula:

Weight = (60.3 − 3.91) × 3.91 × 0.02466

Weight = 56.39 × 3.91 × 0.02466

Weight = 220.4849 × 0.02466 ≈ 5.437 kg/m

  1. Conclusion: A 2″ Schedule 40S pipe weighs approximately 5.44 kg/m, matching the values published in ASME B36.19 reference tables.

Frequently Asked Questions

The formula is Weight (kg/m) = (OD − WT) × WT × 0.02466, with OD and WT measured in millimeters.

Schedule 40 follows ASME B36.10M, while Schedule 40S follows ASME B36.19M for stainless steel pipes. The wall thickness may differ in some sizes.

A 6-inch SS 304 Schedule 40S pipe weighs approximately 28.30 kg/m based on its standard dimensions.

NB is a standard pipe size designation, while OD is the actual outside diameter. The OD remains constant for a given NB size across different schedules.

Pipe weight helps calculate structural support requirements, lifting capacity, and shipping loads, helping prevent overloading during installation and transportation.
