What Is a Knife Edge Gate Valve, and How Does It Work?

A knife edge gate valve is an isolation valve built for media a standard gate valve cannot handle cleanly: slurries, powders, fibrous solids and other thick or abrasive fluids. Instead of a flat wedge, the gate has a sharpened, blade-like edge that physically cuts through the media as it closes, rather than trying to seal past whatever is sitting in the flow path. When the valve is fully open, the gate lifts completely clear of the bore, so there is nothing in the way to trap solids or restrict flow.

Where a Standard Gate Valve Falls Short

A conventional gate or globe valve depends on a clean seating surface to shut off properly. Feed it slurry, ash or fibrous solids and material builds up on the seat, the gate jams, or the seal simply wears through. A knife edge design sidesteps the problem by cutting through the material rather than fighting it, which is why it has become the standard choice in mining, cement and wastewater plants.
