What Is Inconel 718 Round Bar?
Inconel 718 is a precipitation-hardenable nickel-chromium-iron superalloy uniquely formulated to deliver extremely high tensile and yield strength at both room temperature and elevated temperatures, combined with excellent fatigue life and weldability. Its strength comes from a γ” (gamma double prime) precipitation hardening mechanism involving niobium-rich precipitates within the nickel matrix — a response that is deliberately sluggish, giving Inconel 718 exceptional weldability compared to other precipitation-hardenable superalloys.
Key characteristics that make Inconel 718 the world’s most popular superalloy:
- Outstanding strength: Tensile strength up to 1,379 MPa (200 ksi) in the aged condition — far exceeding standard stainless steels
- Wide temperature service range: Retains meaningful mechanical properties from cryogenic temperatures (−253 °C / −423 °F) up to 704 °C (1,300 °F)
- Excellent weldability: Unlike many high-strength nickel alloys, Inconel 718 can be welded and brazed without cracking — critical for jet engine fabrication
- Good corrosion resistance: Resists oxidation, chloride stress-corrosion cracking, and pitting in a range of environments
- Non-magnetic: Important for certain aerospace and MRI-adjacent applications
- Precision dimensional stability: Holds tight tolerances through heat treatment, making it ideal for precision machined components
Aashish Metals supplies Inconel 718 bars in the full range of sizes and forms demanded by aerospace, defence, energy, and industrial customers.

Where Inconel 718 Round Bars Are Used
Inconel 718 is the world’s most produced superalloy, and for good reason — its unique combination of weldability, ultra-high strength, and wide service temperature range makes it irreplaceable in the most demanding engineering applications.
Aerospace & Defence (Primary Application) Inconel 718 bar stock is the standard material for gas turbine engine discs, turbine blades, compressor blades, afterburner components, thrust reversers, airframe structural elements, and high-temperature fasteners. Its combination of high strength at cryogenic conditions and retention of mechanical properties up to 704 °C makes it uniquely suited to this role. Rocket motor components and spacecraft structures also rely on Inconel 718’s strength from cryogenic to elevated temperatures, including excellent vibration fatigue resistance.
Oil & Gas / Subsea Inconel 718 bars are used for subsea wellhead components, valves, choke bodies, pressure vessel trim, and high-strength fasteners in sour-gas (H₂S) environments — especially for components requiring NACE MR0175 compliance. Pair with our Inconel 718 fasteners for complete corrosion-resistant fastener packages.
Power Generation Gas turbine components, steam turbine discs, and nuclear reactor fuel element spacers use Inconel 718 round bars for their high strength, weldability, and dimensional stability through thermal cycling.
Chemical & Marine Pump shafts, valve stems, agitator shafts, and marine propulsion components operating in aggressive chemical or seawater environments — where both corrosion resistance and strength are non-negotiable.
Automotive & Motorsport Turbocharger wheels, exhaust valves, and high-performance engine fasteners in race engines and high-performance vehicles.
Medical & Research Non-magnetic character and biocompatibility make Inconel 718 suitable for medical implants and laboratory instrument components.
HSN Codes for Inconel 718 Round Bars:

- 7505 12 20
- 7228 60 99
- 7604 10 20
Manufacturing Techniques
Inconel 718 round bars are produced through several manufacturing routes:
Hot Rolling — Standard production method for most diameter ranges. Bars are rolled at high temperature, giving good microstructure and mechanical properties. Surface is black (as-rolled) and tolerances are wider.
Cold Drawing — Bars are drawn through dies at room temperature after hot rolling, producing tighter tolerances, improved surface finish, and increased strength. Ideal for precision machining.
Forging — Closed-die or open-die forging produces bars with superior grain refinement, higher fatigue strength, and better impact toughness. AMS 5662 forged bar is the standard aerospace specification for high-integrity rotating components.
Extrusion — Used for larger diameter bars and special profiles.
Machining — Centerless grinding and turned/peeled finish options provide the tightest tolerances and best surface quality.
FAQs - Inconel 718 Round Bar
Inconel 718 round bar is used primarily in aerospace gas turbine engine discs, turbine blades, compressor shafts, afterburner components, rocket motor parts, and high-strength fasteners. It is also used in oil & gas subsea equipment, nuclear reactor components, marine propulsion shafts, and high-performance automotive engine parts — anywhere requiring maximum strength combined with good corrosion resistance.
Aashish Metals stocks Inconel 718 round bars from 2 mm to 800 mm in diameter (custom sizes available), with lengths of 3,000 mm and 6,000 mm as standard, or custom cut lengths from 1 to 6 metres.
AMS 5662 covers Inconel 718 in the solution-annealed (softened) condition — used as the starting condition for subsequent machining before final age hardening. AMS 5663 covers Inconel 718 in the fully precipitation-hardened (aged) condition, delivering maximum tensile and yield strength for direct use in structural and rotating components.
Yes — and this is one of Inconel 718’s key advantages over other precipitation-hardenable superalloys. Its sluggish precipitation hardening response means it resists post-weld cracking. TIG and MIG welding are both used, and the alloy can be welded in the solution-annealed condition then age hardened after welding.
Inconel 718 retains useful mechanical properties from cryogenic temperatures (−253 °C / −423 °F) up to approximately 704 °C (1,300 °F). Above 704 °C, creep becomes a limiting factor. For higher temperature service, Inconel 625 or Waspaloy may be more appropriate.
Inconel 718 round bar prices vary by diameter, condition (annealed vs aged), quantity, and current raw material costs. Indicative market ranges: bright bars from US $0.5–1,000/piece (FOB); polished bars from US $0.5–1,000/piece; Werkstoff Nr. 2.4668 bar from US $1–900/piece.
