Aashish Metal & Alloys supplies SS 317/317L sheets and plates to EPC contractors and fabricators in the petrochemical, pharmaceutical, pulp & paper, and offshore sectors across India and over 40 export markets.

What is Stainless Steel 317 / 317L?

317 and 317L stainless steel are 300 series molybdenum alloyed austenitic stainless steels. Grade 317 has a higher molybdenum content (3-4%) than SS 316, giving it improved resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion and chloride induced stress corrosion cracking. The low carbon form of SS 317 is known as Grade 317L (where the carbon is ≤ 0.035%). This is a useful grade for welded fabrications where sensitization and intergranular corrosion are not desired.

They are extremely resistant to sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, hydrochloric acid and other corrosive solutions and are essential in chemical processes, pharmaceutical production and marine use.

Frequently Asked Questions — SS 317 / 317L Sheets & Plates

SS 317 and 317L are both molybdenum-alloyed austenitic stainless steels with the same base composition, but 317L has a maximum carbon content of 0.035% compared to 0.08% in standard 317. This lower carbon in 317L prevents sensitization during welding, making it the preferred grade for any application involving welded joints or heat-affected zones.

Yes, in aggressive chemical environments. SS 317L contains 3–4% molybdenum versus 2–3% in 316L, giving it superior resistance to pitting corrosion, sulfuric acid, and chloride attack. For moderate-corrosion environments, 316L is cost-effective, but for harsh acid services, 317L outperforms 316L significantly.

Standard sheet sizes include 1000×2000 mm, 1220×2440 mm, 1500×3000 mm, and 2000×4000 mm. Thickness ranges from 0.1 mm (shim) to over 100 mm (heavy plate). Aashish Metal & Alloys can supply custom-cut sizes as per your project drawings.

We supply SS 317L plates in 2B, 2D, BA (Bright Annealed), No.1 (Hot Rolled Annealed Pickled), No.4, No.8 (Mirror), Hairline, Checkered, Sandblasted, and Brushed finishes. Surface finish selection depends on the application — industrial grades typically use No.1 or 2B, while decorative and food-grade applications prefer BA or Mirror finishes.

The price of SS 317L sheets in India typically ranges from ₹280 to ₹600 per kg depending on thickness, surface finish, mill brand, and order quantity. Thinner cold-rolled grades with special finishes are priced higher. Contact Aashish Metal & Alloys for a current, quantity-specific quotation.
