Monel is a specialist rather than an all-rounder, roughly two-thirds nickel and one-third copper, and its home is hydrofluoric acid and flowing seawater. The two grades split by job: 400 is the corrosion grade, and Monel K500 round bars are the age-hardened, high-strength version for shafts and pump parts. The One Job Nothing Else Does: Hydrofluoric Acid
Hydrofluoric acid destroys titanium, attacks most stainless quickly, and generates enough trouble from trace fluorides to end lesser materials, but Monel handles it. HF alkylation units in refineries are built around Monel for exactly this reason, and where a stream carries HF or free fluorides, the material conversation usually starts and ends here. The nickel-copper chemistry also gives strong resistance to hydrochloric and sulphuric acids under reducing conditions, to neutral and alkaline salts, and to flowing seawater, where it resists the erosion and cavitation that trouble copper alloys, which is the property it shares with the cupronickels on our Copper Nickel page. That combination, HF acid plus fast seawater, is a niche almost nothing else fills.
The Reducing-Conditions Rule for Monel
The honest caveat sits right next to the strength. Monel has no chromium, so it depends on reducing conditions and performs best when oxygen and oxidising salts are absent. In aerated or oxidising environments its corrosion resistance falls, and oxidising acids such as nitric attack it. The practical rule is simple: Monel is excellent in de-aerated hydrofluoric, hydrochloric and sulphuric acid, and the wrong choice the moment the stream turns oxidising. Where oxidising conditions are present, the answer is the Hastelloy C grades or an Inconel grade instead. Tell us whether the stream is aerated when you enquire, because it changes the answer.

Monel 400 (N04400)
Monel 400 is the volume grade and the one most enquiries mean. It is a solid-solution nickel-copper alloy that is not hardenable by heat treatment, so it is strengthened by cold work and stays tough to cryogenic temperatures. We hold it as Monel 400 round bars for machined valve, pump and acid-service components, pipes and tubes for HF and reducing-acid lines, fittings, fasteners and sheets and plates. It is the standard material for HF alkylation hardware, marine pump and valve trim, and reducing-acid process equipment.
Monel K500 (N05500)
Monel K500 takes the corrosion resistance of 400 and adds strength. Small additions of aluminium and titanium let it be age-hardened to roughly three times the yield strength of 400 while keeping almost the same corrosion behaviour, which makes it the grade for pump shafts, propeller shafts, valve stems, and fasteners that must hold load in seawater and acid service. We stock Monel K500 round bars for these machined high-strength parts. Because it is age-hardened, K500 needs the right heat-treatment condition for the duty, so state the temper or the application when you enquire.

Nickel-copper alloys are specified where failure is expensive, so every order ships with an EN 10204 mill test certificate, heat-number traceable, with positive material identification available piece by piece so a K500 is confirmed as K500 and not 400.
