Corrosion Resistance Hastelloy C276 Bar Performance in Aggressive Media
The most frequently asked question when specifying Hastelloy bar is whether to select C276 or Hastelloy C22 Round Bar. The table below clarifies the key differences:
| Property | Hastelloy C276 (UNS N10276) | Hastelloy C22 (UNS N06022) |
|---|---|---|
| Nickel Content | Balance (~57%) | Balance (~56%) |
| Chromium (Cr) | 14.5 to 16.5% | 20 to 22.5% |
| Molybdenum (Mo) | 15 to 17% | 12.5 to 14.5% |
| Tungsten (W) | 3 to 4.5% | 2.5 to 3.5% |
| Density | 8.89 g/cm3 | 8.69 g/cm3 |
| Tensile Strength (min) | 790 MPa | 690 MPa |
| Best Corrosion Resistance | Reducing media: HCl, HF, H2SO4 at all concentrations | Mixed oxidising and reducing media; best pitting and crevice resistance |
| Pitting / Crevice Resistance | Excellent | Superior (higher Cr content) |
| High Temp Service Limit | Up to 1038 degrees C | Up to 1038 degrees C |
| ASTM Standard (Bar) | ASTM B574 | ASTM B574 |
| Recommended For | Severe reducing acid service, HCl at all concentrations, sour gas | Mixed acid service, FGD environments, chlorine bleach |
Selection guidance: Choose Hastelloy C276 when the primary concern is resistance to reducing acids — particularly HCl, HF and H2SO4 at elevated concentrations and temperatures. Choose Hastelloy C22 where the service environment contains a mixture of oxidising and reducing media, or where superior pitting and crevice corrosion resistance is the priority.

Applications of Hastelloy C276 Round Bars
Component-Level Applications
Agitator shafts: PSQ bar is the standard specification for agitator shaft applications in chemical reactors handling HCl, H2SO4, HF and mixed acid environments, where dimensional precision and corrosion resistance must be maintained simultaneously.
Pump shafts: The combination of tensile strength (790 MPa min), corrosion resistance and machinability makes C276 PSQ bar the preferred choice for centrifugal and reciprocating pump shafts in chemical process industries.
Valve stems and spindles: Hex bar and round bar in C276 are used for valve stems and spindles in severe service valves handling chlorine, HCl and mixed acid streams.
Heat exchanger tube sheets: C276 forged bar and plate are machined into tube sheets for heat exchangers in chloride-rich and acid service.
Reactor internals: Baffles, supports, thermowell bars and instrumentation components machined from C276 round bar for chemical and pharmaceutical reactors.
Industry Applications
Chemical Processing Industry: Primary industry for C276 bar; used in acid pickling tanks, chemical reactors, and agitator shafts handling HCl, H2SO4 and HF.
Pollution Control / Flue Gas Desulphurisation (FGD): C276 bar and fittings for absorber vessels and rotating equipment in coal-fired power plant scrubber systems.
Pulp and Paper Industry: Bleach plant equipment, digesters and handling systems where chlorine compounds and acids are present.
Offshore Oil and Gas: Downhole tools, wellhead components and subsea equipment in sour gas (H2S + CO2 + chloride) service per NACE MR0175.
Pharmaceutical Manufacturing: Reactor shafts, agitators and vessel internals where both acid resistance and cleanliness are required.
Waste Treatment and Incineration: Components handling aggressive leachates, scrubber liquids and chloride-contaminated waste streams.
Marine and Desalination: Pump shafts, impellers and fasteners in seawater and brine handling systems.

Hastelloy C276 Round Bar Frequently Asked Questions
ASTM B574 is a standard specification published by ASTM International of wrought Hastelloy C276 (UNS N10276) bar. The same standard that is used by ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code is ASME SB574 that is used in the construction of pressure vessels and piping. The technical specifications – composition, mechanical properties and testing are the same. ASME SB574 must be used in ASME-coded construction when the material is utilized.
No. Hastelloy C276 cannot be hardened by heat treatment. Cold working is the only way to increase strength. After welding or forming, solution annealing (usually 1121 degrees C followed by water quench) is used to reestablish the optimum corrosion resistance. The alloy is more work hardening than conventional austenitic stainless steels.
PSQ (Pump Shaft Quality) bar is centreless-ground bar made of Hastelloy C276 in a tight tolerance of diameter, straightness and finish. These accuracy parameters play a pivotal role in rotating equipment tasks whereby shaft deflection and surface roughness influence mechanical seal operation and equipment dependability. PSQ bar Precludes second grinding processes in most pump shaft applications.
Hastelloy C276 may be utilized as continuous service at temperatures as high as about 1038 degrees C (1900 degrees F). However, corrosion resistance in aqueous media is optimised in the solution-annealed condition. At higher temperatures (above 650 degrees C), aqueous corrosion is replaced by thermal oxidation as the dominant mode of degradation.
Yes. One of the main distinctions of Hastelloy C276 in comparison with other nickel alloys and stainless steels is its great resistance to hydrochloric acid (HCl) in all concentrations and temperatures. This causes it to be the standard material in HCl pickling equipment, acid reactors and their related agitator and pump shafts.
Aashish Metals provides EN 10204 3.1 mill test reports, certifying the chemical composition and mechanical properties. EN 10204 3.2 (third-party witnessed) can be requested. Oil and gas applications can use compliance documentation of NACE MR0175 and have raw material traceability certificates.
