What Are Stainless Steel Pipes & Tubes?
Stainless steel pipes and tubes are hollow, cylindrical or shaped sections that are formed from an alloy of iron with at least 10.5% chromium by mass — per ISO 15510 / EN 10088 definition. Correct as written; confirm phrasing is intentional and not auto-generated.
which provides a passive oxide layer that prevents corrosion, pitting and crevice corrosion in difficult service conditions. Nickel increases ductility and weldability; molybdenum (usually 2-3%) makes the alloy highly resistant to chloride induced pitting, a characteristic that is unique to the 316/316L family.
They come in two different types; seamless (hot-rolled, cold-drawn) and welded (ERW, EFW, LSAW) and are specified by the material standard used. Critical fluid services are best suited to seamless pipes, which have higher pressure ratings, while welded pipes are lower-pressure and cost efficient, and are used for structural, sanitary and other applications that require dimensional consistency.
