SS 904L contains significantly higher levels of nickel (23–28% vs. 10–14%), molybdenum (4–5% vs. 2–3%), and additionally contains 1–2% copper, which SS 316L does not. These differences give 904L a far superior resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, sulphuric acid attack, and stress corrosion cracking. Its Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) is approximately 34–36 versus 25–27 for 316L. 904L is specified when 316L or 317L have already failed in service.
The primary standards are ASTM A312 TP904L (seamless and straight-seam welded austenitic pipe), ASME SA312 TP904L (for pressure vessel applications), ASTM A213 TP904L (seamless tubes for boilers and heat exchangers), and ASTM A269 TP904L (seamless and welded austenitic stainless steel tubing). European equivalents fall under EN 10216-5 (seamless precision tube) and EN 10217-7 (welded tube).
No. SS 904L is a fully austenitic stainless steel and is non-magnetic in all conditions, including after cold working. This makes it suitable for applications where magnetic interference is a concern, such as MRI-adjacent infrastructure or sensitive instrumentation environments.
SS 904L is generally recommended for continuous service up to approximately 400°C (750°F). Above this range, sensitisation and sigma-phase precipitation can reduce corrosion resistance. For cryogenic applications, 904L performs well down to -196°C due to its austenitic structure and high nickel content.
Yes. SS 904L can be welded using all conventional methods including TIG (GTAW), MIG (GMAW), SMAW (stick), SAW, and FCAW. No pre-heating or post-weld heat treatment is required. However, it is important to use matching-composition filler metals (e.g., ER 385 / AWS A5.9) to maintain corrosion resistance in the weld zone.
