Stainless Steel 310 / 310S Pipes & Tubes

Engineered for aggressive sulphuric acid, chloride, and reducing acid service conditions, SS 317 / 317L Pipe and Tube is specified across chemical, oil & gas, pharmaceutical, and power generation applications where standard 316L has already failed in service.

We produce, stock and export all types of SS 317 and SS 317L pipes, tubes, seamless pipes, welded tubes which are fully standardised as per ASTM A312, ASTM A213, ASTM A249, ASTM A269 and ASTM A358. Producing high-quality metals and alloys, our in-house quality testing and our global supply chain make us your preferred supplier for procurement teams in the chemical, oil & gas, petrochemical, pharmaceutical and power generation industries. SS 317L pipe has a density of 8.0 g/cm 3, a tensile strength of 515 MPa and excellent resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion, which is superior to that of conventional austenitic grades, especially in acidic chloride environments. Aashish Metal & Alloys supplies SS 317 and 317L pipe with full mill test certificates, competitive pricing, and dispatch from Mumbai to projects worldwide.

What Is Stainless Steel 317 / 317L? Expert Material Overview

Two low carbon austenitic stainless steels that have been designed to be molybdenum bearing, stainless steel 317 and 317L, have been developed to provide superior resistance to corrosive conditions. The ‘L’ in 317L indicates that it is an ultra-low carbon (max 0.035%) material, making it the material of choice for fabricated assemblies that will be in contact with corrosive environments or elevated temperatures during welding.

These alloys are generally resistant to stress corrosion cracking, pitting, crevice corrosion and general corrosion, with dramatically improved resistance compared to the 304 and 316 conventional grades, through addition of molybdenum (3–4%) and higher levels of chromium (18–20%) and nickel (11–15%). Their excellent formability and non-magnetic property (annealed) broadens their application field into a wide range of industries.

FAQs - SS 317L Pipe & Tube

The primary difference is carbon content. SS 317 has a maximum carbon content of 0.08%, while SS 317L is limited to 0.035% maximum carbon. The low carbon in 317L prevents carbide precipitation (sensitization) in the heat-affected zone during welding, making it significantly better suited for welded fabrications exposed to corrosive environments. For most industrial applications requiring welding, SS 317L is the preferred choice.

Key ASTM standards include: ASTM A312 (seamless and welded austenitic stainless pipe), ASTM A213 (seamless tubes for boilers and heat exchangers), ASTM A249 (welded boiler/heat exchanger tubes), ASTM A269 (general service seamless and welded tubes), and ASTM A358 (EFW pipe for corrosive and high-temperature service up to 8 inches). The equivalent ASME standards are SA312, SA213, SA249, SA269, and SA358 respectively.

We maintain a ready stock of seamless pipes from 1/8″ NB to 24″ NB, ERW pipes from 1/8″ NB to 36″ NB, and EFW pipes from 6″ NB to 100″ NB. Outside diameters range from 6.00 mm to 914.4 mm. Wall thicknesses range from 0.3 mm to 50 mm, covering Schedules 5, 10, 20, 40, 80, 160, XXS, STD, and XS. Custom sizes can be manufactured on request.

SS 317L contains 3–4% molybdenum versus 2–3% in SS 316L. This extra molybdenum provides substantially higher resistance to pitting corrosion and crevice corrosion, especially in reducing acids, chloride-containing environments, and acidic process streams. In sulphuric acid, acetic acid, and other aggressive chemical media encountered in chemical processing plants, 317L significantly outperforms 316L and extends equipment service life considerably.

Yes. SS 317L pipe is suitable for continuous service up to 870°C and intermittent service up to 925°C. At temperatures above 425°C, low-carbon 317L is preferred over standard 317 to minimise carbide precipitation. It is resistant to oxidation up to 600°F (316°C) for continuous service. For high-temperature applications, the material is typically specified per ASTM A376 (seamless austenitic pipe for high-temperature central station service) and ASTM A358 grades.
